Big Bend on the Murray River

Murray River Run, April 2019 - write-up

Click here for an overview of the Maher Escorted Tours "Murray River Run" trip which I led in April 2019. Under perfect blue skies, this trip was a wonderful blend of rural isolation and city sights. If you're after tranquility, stunning scenery, birdlife galore, plenty of food and a good measure of conviviality on tour, I highly recommend this trip. Accommodation is in lovely country hotels along the river, not on the boat itself (which is a day boat called the Spirit of the Murray). This trip is not to be confused with the Murray Princess which is a paddle steamer that operates on the lower part of the river.

The Spirit of the Murray runs from Border Cliffs on the Victoria/South Australia border near Mildura, and Wellington which is down towards Adelaide. The trip can be taken in either direction. At times we were the only sign of human life on the river. The birdlife is fantastic.

If you thought travelling the Murray River meant time spent cruising through muddy water - think again!
