Omaha Beach

This fabulous trip (8 days/7 nights, Friday to Friday), showcases the beauty and diversity of this area in a behind-the-scenes way that will take your breath away. 

I have been coming to this area for nearly 50 years and know it intimately and I look forward to sharing its many secrets with you. 

This is a laid-back yet revitalising trip encompassing nature, history, art, sustenance and more.

NB: There are two versions of the Marvellous Matakana trip - one is more Gentle (G), one is more Active (A). The one outlined here is the Gentle (G) version. Check the (A) tab for the Active one.

*Most activities, but not all meals are included. 


DAY 1: Friday (D) – Journey North
Drive from Auckland to Matakana with a stop in Puhoi en route for lunch and look around. Arrive in Matakana and settle in. Evening: Welcome Drinks and Dinner

DAY 2: Saturday (L, D) - Food and Wine
Visit the renowned Farmers' Market. Poke around the boutique shops. Tour some of the local vineyards, including lunch. Relax before dinner at a local restaurant.

DAY 3: Sunday (L) - Art and Gardens
Drive around the local bays. Visit Omaio Gardens, and then the world-class Sculptureum with lunch at their restaurant, Rothko. Learn about the local oysters (with tasting). Evening: Dinner in Matakana, and a movie at the iconic Matakana Cinema.

DAY 4: Monday (D) - Beaches and Birds
Enjoy the glories of Pakiri and Omaha Beaches, including a visit to the Omaha Bird Sanctuary. Visit Beetopia. Lunch: at a local cafe. Evening: Drinks and dinner at Sally's beach house in Omaha, followed by kiwi-spotting with a local guide at Tawharanui. A unique end to a day in paradise! 

DAY 5: Tuesday (D) - Goat Island/Leigh
Explore the Goat Island Marine Reserve, take a trip on a glass bottom boat. Enjoy lunch at the Leigh Sawmill Cafe. Visit The Vivian Gallery. Discover the charm of Matakana Country Park. Evening: Dinner at a local restaurant. 

DAY 6: Wednesday - History and Shopping
Step back in time with a visit to the lovely Warkworth District Museum and heritage listed Cement Works ruins. Tour the local chocolate factory, with lunch. Free time for shopping. Relax with an ice-cream. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, followed by Quiz Night.
(Keen golfers may opt to have a round of golf instead of shopping today).

DAY 7: Thursday (D) - Islands, Bays and Sculptures
Spend the morning on the water discovering this beautiful coast and its islands, including a visit to Kawau Island. Lunch at Brick Bay, with sculpture trail walk. Explore the local area. End the day with a fabulous Farewell Dinner. 

DAY 8: Friday - Cruise Home
Cruise the Matakana River, followed by lunch in Matakana, before departing back to Auckland.

This itinerary has been designed with gentleness in mind.
Guests do not require high fitness or mobility.
If you have minor travel or health issues, that is okay. 
Note the Kiwi spotting expedition is an evening one, and requires walking in the bush, so requires a level of being moderately intrepid!

Wheelchair/scooter can be arranged if required.
